IN LOVING MEMORY OF GEORGE BEST 1946-2005.george best, then a charming, street-urchin of a lad, arrived in Manchester in 1961 at the age of 15, with another young player called Eric McMordie. but the genius which was to beguile the football world nearly didn't get a chance to flourish. after just 24 hours in Old Trafford, Best and McMordie felt they had seen enough and fled back to Ulster. Best's father telephoned United's manager, which was Matt Busby then, and within two weeks, he was back at the club. he turned professional in 1963 and made his debut that autumn at home against West Bromwich Albion. george best reached unimaginable heights with his outrageous skills and deftness in a career that lasted a mere six-years in the top, before self-destructing itself into alcoholism, bankruptcy and jail. george best died of liver cancer, after battling with himself, trying to suit to his new given liver. as journalist Michael Parkinson would have said, "the only tragedy George Best has to confront is that he will never know how good he could have been."
